Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology [Volume 8 Jan (2007) - Sep (2007)]|
Molecular cell biology is a marriage
of two distinct, yet complementary, disciplines. In its traditional sense, the term 'molecular biology' refers to study of the macromolecules essential to life — nucleic acids and proteins. The field of cell biology is a natural extension of this, integrating what we know at the molecular level into an understanding of processes and interactions at the cellular level. Only by combining both fields can we paint a broad picture of essential biological processes such as how cells divide, grow, communicate and die.
Soil Microbiology, Ecology and Biochemistry
Now in its third edition, this classic textbook includes basic concepts and applications in agriculture, forestry, environmental science, and a new section entirely devoted to ecology. This revised and updated edition guides students through biochemical and microbial processes in soils and introduces them to microbial processes in water and sediments. Soil Microbiology, Ecology, and Biochemistry serves as an invaluable resourcefor students in biogeochemistry, soil microbiology, soil ecology, sustainable agriculture, and environmental amelioration.
Animal Biotechnology: Science-Based Concerns
Genetic-based animal biotechnology has produced new food and pharmaceutical products and promises many more advances to benefit humankind. These exciting prospects are accompanied by considerable unease, however, about matters such as safety and ethics. This book identifies science-based and policy-related concerns about animal biotechnologykey issues that must be resolved before the new breakthroughs can reach their potential. The book includes a short history of the field and provides understandable definitions of terms like cloning. Looking at technologies on the near horizon, the authors discuss what we know and what we fear about their effectsthe inadvertent release of dangerous microorganisms, the safety of products derived from biotechnology, the impact of genetically engineered animals on their environment. In addition to these concerns, the book explores animal welfare concerns, and our societal and institutional capacity to manage and regulate the technology and its products. This accessible volume will be important to everyone interested in the implications of the use of animal biotechnology.Science Magazine ~ Vol 323 16th January 2009
Drug-Drug Interactions in Pharmaceutical Development
Drug-Drug Interactions in Pharmaceutical Development comprehensively reviews the relevant science, industrial practice, and regulatory agency positions on drug-drug interactions. It focuses on the evaluation of potential drug-drug interactions, allowing researchers to address risk factors before a drug is put to market. The book covers both clinical and nonclinical aspects for understanding drug-drug interactions as well as in vitro and in vivo studies for use in studying interactions at the drug discovery stage.
Gene cloning
Description: Cloning genes has become such a routine part of molecular biology, and the approaches to it so many and diverse, undergraduates can easily be overwhelmed. Gene Cloning is designed to give the undergraduate a broad overview of the subject, guiding the student through the basic elements involved and their utility, and further through the interpretation of results and datasets. Having understood the basic processes, the reader is introduced to some of the most common uses of gene cloning, from applications with more research-oriented goals to practical applications in biotechnology in medicine. Clearly presented in two-colour text, Gene Cloning is essential reading for undergraduates in the molecular life sciences.
Gene Regulation
Description: Gene regulation is an essential process in the development and maintenance of a healthy body, and as such is a central focus in both basic science and medical research. Gene Regulation, Fifth Edition, provides the student with a clear, up-to-date description of gene regulation in eukaryotes, distilling the vast and complex primary literature into a concise overview. For this fifth edition, in addition to extensive updating of existing material, sections on large-scale methodologies have been expanded, and a new section included on regulation by small interfering RNAs. More detail has been added on the role of multi-protein complexes in transcriptional activation and the discussion of the regulation of factor activity by specific modifications to include acetylation and ubiquitination as well as phosphorylation. The final chapter on gene regulation and human disease now includes additional novel examples, such as RNA edition in motor neurone disease, role of the transcriptional co-activator CBP in Alzheimer's disease and PML-RAR involvement in acute promyelocytic leukemia.
